Regional circulation patterns inducing coastal upwelling in the Baltic Sea

چکیده

Abstract Atmospheric feedback involved in the occurrence of coastal upwelling a small semi-enclosed sea basin, i.e., Baltic Sea, was analysed, and regional circulation conditions triggering different sections were identified. Upwelling summer season (June–August, years 1982–2017) recognized on basis surface temperature patterns. Circulation defined using (1) established daily indices zonal meridional airflow (2) synoptic situation at level distinguished by applying rotated principal component analysis to pressure data. The 12 patterns differed substantially intensity location their centres. mean seasonal frequency generally higher along western shores than meridionally oriented eastern varied from less 10 over 30% more predestined sections, northwestern coast Gulf Bothnia, northern Finland southern Swedish coast. Due variable orientations coastlines, could occur under almost any prevailing wind direction, thus, each classified induce some sections. As deduced fields for pattern, mostly alongshore winds triggered upwelling, which is line with Ekman rule. With time, also be induced stress normal coastline seaward winds.

A statistical approach to coastal upwelling in the Baltic Sea based on the analysis of satellite data

A statistical analysis of Baltic Sea upwelling has been carried out to cover, for the first time, the entire sea area for the period 1990–2009. Weekly composite SST maps based on NOAA/AVHRR satellite data were used to evaluate the location and frequency of upwelling. The results obtained were analysed and compared with earlier studies with excellent agreement. Our study enables the most intense...

Interpretation of Doppler effect-based vertical velocity measurements in the coastal waters of Estonia, Baltic Sea: possible influence of upwelling, Langmuir circulation and turbidity

Doppler effect-based oceanographic instruments have proved very useful in studies of the vertical structure of currents, as well as for vertical fluxes between different layers in frontal zones and upwelling. This paper describes our experiences with a Recording Doppler Current Profiler in the Estonian coastal waters in 2003–2008. The primary task of the field campaigns varied from coastal geom...

Importance of coastal primary production in the northern Baltic Sea

In this study, we measured depth-dependent benthic microalgal primary production in a Bothnian Bay estuary to estimate the benthic contribution to total primary production. In addition, we compiled data on benthic microalgal primary production in the entire Baltic Sea. In the estuary, the benthic habitat contributed 17 % to the total annual primary production, and when upscaling our data to the...

Near-coastal satellite altimetry: Sea surface height variability in the North Sea – Baltic Sea area

The radiometer wet tropospheric correction is a limiting factor of the application of near-coastal altimetry observations in the North Sea – Baltic Sea area. Using an ECMWF model based correction instead, we increase the return rate from 70% to 95%, with observations as close as 10 km from the coast. The altimetry and 39 coastal tide gauges are referenced to the same state of the art regional g...
