Reducing the Extinction Risk of Populations Threatened by Infectious Diseases
نویسندگان
چکیده
Extinction risk is increasing for a range of species due to variety threats, including disease. Emerging infectious diseases can cause severe declines in wild animal populations, population fragmentation and reducing gene flow. Small, isolated, host populations may lose adaptive potential become more susceptible extinction other threats. Management the genetic consequences disease-induced decline often necessary. Whilst disease threats need be addressed, they difficult mitigate. Actions implemented conserve Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii), which has suffered deadly facial tumour (DFTD), exemplify how management used reduce threatened by Supplementation an emerging conservation technique that benefit enabling flow conserving their through restoration. Other candidate from via supplementation but concerns regarding outbreeding depression prevent widespread incorporation this into wildlife management. However, existing knowledge identify would where low. For and, situations eradication not option, managers should consider buffer against inbreeding loss diversity.

Reducing the extinction risk of stochastic populations via nondemographic noise.
We consider nondemographic noise in the form of uncertainty in the reaction step size and reveal a dramatic effect this noise may have on the stability of self-regulating populations. Employing the reaction scheme mA→kA but allowing, e.g., the product number k to be a priori unknown and sampled from a given distribution, we show that such nondemographic noise can greatly reduce the population's...
متن کاملInfectious diseases and extinction risk in wild mammals.
Parasite-driven declines in wildlife have become increasingly common and can pose significant risks to natural populations. We used the IUCN Red List of Threatened and Endangered Species and compiled data on hosts threatened by infectious disease and their parasites to better understand the role of infectious disease in contemporary host extinctions. The majority of mammal species considered th...
متن کاملReducing the risk of human extinction.
In this century a number of events could extinguish humanity. The probability of these events may be very low, but the expected value of preventing them could be high, as it represents the value of all future human lives. We review the challenges to studying human extinction risks and, by way of example, estimate the cost effectiveness of preventing extinction-level asteroid impacts.
متن کاملQuantification of extinction risk: IUCN's system for classifying threatened species.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species was increasingly used during the 1980s to assess the conservation status of species for policy and planning purposes. This use stimulated the development of a new set of quantitative criteria for listing species in the categories of threat: critically endangered, endangered, and vulnerable. These criteria, ...
متن کاملSpread of infectious diseases through clustered populations
Networks of person-person contacts form the substrate along which infectious diseases spread. Most network-based studies of the spread focus on the impact of variations in degree (the number of contacts an individual has). However, other effects such as clustering, variations in infectiousness or susceptibility, or variations in closeness of contacts may play a significant role. We develop anal...
