Reducing carbon footprint by replacing generators with solar PV systems: a contingent valuation study in Lagos, Nigeria

Abstract Nigeria is endowed with abundant sunshine year-round; thus, solar PV would solve the environmental problems associated petrol-powered generators. However, it unclear whether households are willing to transition. Thus, we analyze households’ willingness pay (WTP) for under four scenarios: (i) WTP when a complemented generator, (ii) completely displaces (iii) plus subsidy, and (iv) given subsidy. We find that higher can displace generators completely. Subsidy monthly rather than upfront payment scale up adoption of by about 6 per cent.
