Reduced survival of Steller sea lions in the Gulf of Alaska following marine heatwave

چکیده

The North Pacific marine heatwave of 2014–2016 (PMH), one the most geographically-extensive and severe heatwaves on record, resulted in widespread persistent perturbation Gulf Alaska California Current ecosystems. Negative effects PMH mammals have been observed, but are not yet well understood. endangered Steller sea lion Eumetopias jubatus is an important top predator that also particularly vulnerable to sudden or ecosystem shifts. We examined survival 4,178 known-aged lions marked from 2000 2016 Kodiak Island through Southeast Alaska, using mark-recapture models 12,811 resightings collected 2001 2021. Survival adult females aged 3–15 was reduced -0.05 -0.23 during areas east, west, Cook Inlet. unaffected by PMH, Sugarloaf 5–8 -0.13 summer 2015 2016. Lowest occurred 2017, 2014 Reduced continued post-PMH Kenai Peninsula/Prince William Sound, Alaska. males insensitive except where male -0.25 2017. Prolonged intermittent high female mortality may reduce population growth initiate regional declines. response varied regionally despite similar patterns ocean warming throughout our study area, suggesting east versus west Inlet were affected differently perhaps due habitat oceanographic differences.

the effect of taftan pozzolan on the compressive strength of concrete in the environmental conditions of oman sea (chabahar port)

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

High Natality Rates of Endangered Steller Sea Lions in Kenai Fjords, Alaska and Perceptions of Population Status in the Gulf of Alaska

Steller sea lions experienced a dramatic population collapse of more than 80% in the late 1970s through the 1990s across their western range in Alaska. One of several competing hypotheses about the cause holds that reduced female reproductive rates (natality) substantively contributed to the decline and continue to limit recovery in the Gulf of Alaska despite the fact that there have been very ...

Acoustic identification of female Steller sea lions

Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatrn) mothers and pups establish and maintain contact with individually distinctive vocalizations. Our objective was to develop a robust neural network to classify females based on their mother-pup contact calls. We catalogued 573 contact calls from 25 females in 1998 and 1323 calls from 46 females in 1999. From this database, a subset of 26 females with sufficie...

Inter-Population Movements of Steller Sea Lions in Alaska with Implications for Population Separation

Genetic studies and differing population trends support the separation of Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) into a western distinct population segment (WDPS) and an eastern DPS (EDPS) with the dividing line between populations at 144° W. Despite little exchange for thousands of years, the gap between the breeding ranges narrowed during the past 15-30 years with the formation of new rookeri...

Survival of adult Steller sea lions in Alaska: senescence, annual variation and covariation with male reproductive success

Population dynamics of long-lived vertebrates depend critically on adult survival, yet factors affecting survival and covariation between survival and other vital rates in adults remain poorly examined for many taxonomic groups of long-lived mammals (e.g. actuarial senescence has been examined for only 9 of 34 extant pinniped species using longitudinal data). We used mark-recapture models and d...
