Red Harvester Ant (Pogonomyrmex barbatus F. Smith; Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Preference for Cover Crop Seeds in South Texas

چکیده

Harvester ants often selectively forage seeds, causing these to be viewed as pests in agricultural areas where they may on crop seeds. While little research has been done harvester ant preferences for cover grower observations the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) suggest that remove seeds before germination. We examined red (Pogonomyrmex barbatus F. Smith) (fescue, oat, sunn hemp, radish, vetch, and wheatgrass) effects of a commonly used bacterial seed inoculant. evaluated relative using depots presented colonies with no prior exposure selected or inoculants. After 24 h, had removed oat radish at same rate preferred wheatgrass control. Fescue, vetch were less preferred. The inoculation did not alter removal rates. Further, both trials was dependent month temperature, indicating potential interactions colony activity levels, availability bank, intensity removal. Together, data indicate foraging seasonal should considered help mitigate predation crops via planting times lower intensity.

The Relation of Recruitment Rate to Activity Rhythms in the Harvester Ant, Pogonomyrmex barbatus (F. Smith) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

The response of a colony of Pogonomyrmex barbatus to bait depends on the activities of the colony at the time bait is offered. Colony activities are temporally patterned within the morning activity period. Both the peak of nest-maintenance work and the onset of the peak of patrolling occur earlier than the peak of foraging. The rate of recruitment to bait is positively correlated with the numbe...

Draft genome of the red harvester ant Pogonomyrmex barbatus.

We report the draft genome sequence of the red harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex barbatus. The genome was sequenced using 454 pyrosequencing, and the current assembly and annotation were completed in less than 1 y. Analyses of conserved gene groups (more than 1,200 manually annotated genes to date) suggest a high-quality assembly and annotation comparable to recently sequenced insect genomes using Sa...

Brood production and lineage discrimination in the red harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex barbatus).

In contrast to the system of caste determination in most social insects, reproductive caste determination in some populations of Pogonomyrmex barbatus has a genetic basis. Populations that exhibit genetic caste determination are segregated into two distinct, genetic lineages. Same-lineage matings result in female reproductives, while inter-lineage matings result in workers. To investigate wheth...

Aggression is task dependent in the red harvester ant ( Pogonomyrmex barbatus )

In many animal species, the propensity for aggression is linked to social context. In social insects, aggressive interactions between colonies are related to the assessment of cuticular hydrocarbon profiles. We investigated how, in the red harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex barbatus, an individual ant's task environment contributes to its hydrocarbon profile, and how task-specific differences in profi...

A taxonomic revision of the seed-harvester ant genus Pogonomyrmex (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) on Hispaniola.

We revise species of seed-harvester ants in the genus Pogonomyrmex (subfamily Myrmicinae) that occur on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. Three species are recognized: P. aterrimus Wheeler (new status), P. saucius Wheeler and Mann, and P. schmitti Forel. Pogonomyrmex schmitti sublaevigatus Wheeler (= schmitti) and P. schmitti darlingtoni Wheeler (= aterrimus) are synonomized. We also describe...
