Recreation and hunting differentially affect deer behaviour and sapling performance

چکیده

Humans are increasingly acknowledged as apex predators that shape landscapes of fear to which herbivores adapt their behaviour. Here, we investigate how humans modify deer space-use and effects on vegetation at two spatial scales; zones with different types human use (largescale risk factor) and, nested within that, trails (fine-scale factor). In three contrasting activities: 1) no recreation, hunting, 2) hunting 3) recreation linked (dropping counts) browsing intensity, relative growth survival planted saplings. Plots were located distances (20 versus 100 m) test affect sapling performance. Additionally, plots distributed over forest heathland habitat-dependent. Deer was highest in the zone without or resulting higher levels lower survival, but only heathland. contrast, performance did not differ between hunting. dropping counts near used for this associated impact Our results show recreational modifies is woody vegetation, while seasonal activities have additive year-round effects. Yet, observed larger scale trails. Furthermore, open heathland, where high visibility presumably increases avoidance behaviour because it detectability decreases escape possibilities. This suggests creates behaviourally mediated cascading influence development, yet these context-dependent. We advocate incorporating human-induced conservation, management research.

Hunting for differentially expressed genes.

Differentially expressed genes are usually identified by comparing steady-state mRNA concentrations. Several methods have been used for this purpose, including differential hybridization, cDNA subtraction, differential display and, more recently, DNA chips. Subtractive hybridization has significantly improved after the polymerase chain reaction was incorporated into the original method and many...

Hunting of roe deer and wild boar in Germany: Is non-lead ammunition suitable for hunting?

BACKGROUND Non-lead hunting ammunition is an alternative to bullets that contain lead. The use of lead ammunition can result in severe contamination of game meat, thus posing a health risk to consumers. With any kind of ammunition for hunting, the terminal effectiveness of bullets is an animal welfare issue. Doubts about the effectiveness of non-lead bullets for a humane kill of game animals in...

Constraint Can Affect Human Perception, Behaviour, and Performance of Search

Advance of search engines has removed an end-user’s constraint on search such as cost (free), operation time (fast response), language (cross-lingual), media (multimedia), and more recently, time-lag from content generation (realtime search). Consequently, we do not usually perceive strong constraint on the use of search engines. The removal of constraint is often seen as an improvement of a sy...
