Recovery From Reduction: The M’Clintock Channel Polar Bear Subpopulation, Nunavut, Canada

چکیده

To retain viable polar bear subpopulations, scientific monitoring studies are conducted to inform adaptive management frameworks. Here we report the results of second structured population study for bears in M’Clintock Channel (MC) subpopulation. Data included biopsy samples collected during a 2014 – 16 subpopulation-wide survey, live mark-recapture data first subpopulation from 1998 2000, and harvest recovery 2016. Results closed capture-recapture model, implemented Bayesian framework animals over 2 yr., produced mean abundance estimate 716 (95% Credible Interval = 545 955) 16, indicating an increase 2000 (284; our Bayesian-calculated estimate: 325 bears). However, model assumptions represents superpopulation. Mean litter sizes did not differ between periods, but number yearlings per adult female declined 0.39 ± 0.10 (SE) 0.27 0.06 16. Apparent survival estimates observed were biased low (0.88 0.02) due unknown immigration emigration. calculated using change periods equaled 0.93, representing growth rate 2%. Body condition improved periods. Our findings indicate MC recovered overharvesting 1979 1999 may be transiently benefitting increased biological productivity associated with local sea ice changes. demographic analyses constrained by density, harvest, small sample sizes, recapture probability, lack movement information; hence, decisions should applied appropriate caution.

Estimating the Barents Sea polar bear subpopulation size

A large-scale survey was conducted in August 2004 to estimate the size of the Barents Sea polar bear subpopulation. We combined helicopter line transect distance sampling (DS) surveys in most of the survey area with total counts in small areas not suitable for DS. Due to weather constraints we failed to survey some of the areas originally planned to be covered by DS. For those, abundance was es...

Polar Bear Conservation in Canada: Defining the Policy Problems

Conservation of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in Canada is based on the goals and principles of the 1973 International Agreement on the Conservation of Polar Bears and Their Habitat, and has long been considered an exemplar of science-based wildlife management. However, accelerating social and ecological changes in the Arctic raise questions about the polar bear management regime’s ability to a...

The Stream Cipher Polar Bear

We propose a new stream cipher called “Polar Bear”. It combines constructions used successfully in other situations. The key initialization uses Rijndael, the steady state uses a dynamic table as in RC4 and we guarantee a long period through the use of a linear feedback shiftregister. The efficiency for short messages is better than that of RC4 while for long messages Polar Bear is about a fact...

Aspects of the Polar Bear Harvest in the Northwest Territories, Canada

We analyzed the age, sex, and chronology of the polar bear (Ursus maritimus) harvest in the Northwest Territories (NWT) from 197980 to 1989-90. The mean annual harvest during that period was 517 with a current quota of 617. Sex and age information was obtained on approximately 90 % of the total kill. The harvest was selective for males (63 %). The mean age, sex ratio, and age composition varied...
