Recovering rare earth elements from contaminated soils: Critical overview of current remediation technologies

چکیده
Rare earth elements (REE) are essential for sustainable energies such as solar and wind power, with rising demand due to the ambitious goal a circular society. REE currently mined from virgin ores while REE-rich contaminated soil is left untreated in environment. Soil remediation strategies needed that concomitantly cleanup harvest metals contribute process economy. In this review we aim (i) define concentrations soils well (ii) identify techniques used remediating soils, emphasizing ones extract REE. Current literature lists polluted vicinities of mines, coal high traffic roads agricultural (due association phosphate fertilizers). We first list conventional separation methods mining industry their main extracting/precipitating Solvent extraction most commonly method followed by electrodeposition at temperatures. then highlight treat These can be separated into two types: (a) stabilize (b) soils. Bioremediation, amendments others offer stabilization REE, eventually creating legacy problem since keep accumulating soil. achieve step closer resource recovery, contributing circularity Techniques phytoremediation, washing electrokinetic treatment show promising results.

Rare Earth Elements in Soils of Jharia Coal Field
There are many sources trough which the soil get enriched and contaminated with REEs. The determination of REEs in environmental samples has been limited because of the lack of sensitive analytical techniques. Soil samples were collected from four sites including open cast coal mine, natural coal burning, coal washery and control in the coal field located in Dhanbad, India. Total concentrations...

Bioremediation of metal-contaminated wastestreams has been successfully demonstrated. Normally, whole cells or microbial exopolymers are used to concentrate and/or precipitate metals in the wastestream to aid in metal removal. Analogous remediation of metal-contaminated soils is more complex because microbial cells or large exopolymers do not move freely through the soil. The use of microbially...
متن کاملElectrokinetic remediation of oil-contaminated soils.
This investigation was undertaken to determine the factors influencing electrokinetic remediation of soils from petroleum pollutants. The remediation method was applied in two versions: (i) static and (ii) flowing, when a sample was washed with leaching solution. It was found that all the soils studied can be purified using this technique. It was also observed that the mineral and grain-size co...
متن کاملPractical remediation of the PCB-contaminated soils
A practical method for the elimination of PCBs from PCB-contaminated soil has been developed by the combination of Soxhlet extraction using a newly-developed modified Soxhlet extractor possessing an outlet valve on the extraction chamber with the chemical degradation. Various types of PCBs contaminated in soils could be completely extracted in refluxing hexane, and the subsequent hydrodechlorin...
متن کاملElectrokinetic Remediation of Mercury-contaminated Soils
A series of batch tests were conducted to investigate the relative desorption potential of mercury from kaolin and glacial till soils under the effect of three extractant agents, namely, KI, NaEDTA and NaCl (all of them with a concentration of 0.1 M). These tests were conducted under different pH conditions (within a pH range between 2 and 12). Also batch tests using deionized water were perfor...
