Record field in a 10 mm-period bulk high-temperature superconducting undulator

Abstract A 10 mm-period, high-temperature superconducting (HTS) undulator consisting of 20 staggered-array GdBa 2 Cu 3 O 7− x (GdBCO) bulk superconductors has been fabricated and tested successfully. Each GdBCO disk was machined into a half-moon shape with micro-meter accuracy shrink-fitted slotted oxygen-free copper which provided pre-stress effective conduction-cooling. The HTS prototype, disks, CoFe poles fitted in long shell, field-cooled magnetized fields up to T at K. An field 2.1 4 mm magnetic gap obtained. This is the largest reported yet for same period length exceeds target value meter-long scheduled hard x-ray I-TOMCAT beamline Swiss Light Source 2.0. We have demonstrated that superconductor based undulators can provide significantly improved performance over alternative technologies.
