Reconstructing the nonadaptive radiation of an ancient lineage of ground?dwelling stick insects (Phasmatodea: Heteropterygidae)

چکیده
Stick and leaf insects (Phasmatodea) are large terrestrial herbivorous arthropods known for masquerading as plant parts such bark, twigs leaves. Their evolutionary history is largely shaped by convergent evolution associated with adaptive radiations on geographically isolated landmasses that have repeatedly generated ground-dwelling ecomorphs. The members of one lineage, however, the Oriental Heteropterygidae, morphologically rather uniform, a predominantly lifestyle. phylogeny Heteropterygidae comprises approximately 130 described species controversial remains uncertain. In particular, systematic position giant Jungle Nymph Heteropteryx dilatata, whose males capable flight exhibit most plesiomorphic wing morphology among extant phasmatodeans, major interest to scientific community. Here, we analysed set seven nuclear mitochondrial genes infer covering group's overall diversity. divergence time estimation reconstruction historical biogeography resulted in an ancestral distribution across Sundaland long distance dispersal events Wallacea, Philippines South Pacific. We were able resolve relationships three principal subgroups revealed Dataminae, which contain entirely wingless small forms, sister group Heteropteryginae + Obriminae. Nonadaptive radiation: Pervasive diet specialization by drift in scale insects?
At least half of metazoan species are herbivorous insects. Why are they so diverse? Most herbivorous insects feed on few plant species, and adaptive host specialization is often invoked to explain their diversification. Nevertheless, it is possible that the narrow host ranges of many herbivorous insects are nonadaptive. Here, we test predictions of this hypothesis with comparative phylogenetic ...
متن کاملMolecular Evidence for Ancient Asexuality in Timema Stick Insects
Asexuality is rare in animals in spite of its apparent advantage relative to sexual reproduction, indicating that it must be associated with profound costs [1-9]. One expectation is that reproductive advantages gained by new asexual lineages will be quickly eroded over time [3, 5-7]. Ancient asexual taxa that have evolved and adapted without sex would be "scandalous" exceptions to this rule, bu...

Three related nucleotide sequences, encoding mature proteins of 108-113 amino acids, have been obtained from antennal cDNA of the Phasmid Eurycantha calcarata. Among these, one is also expressed in the tarsi as demonstrated by N-terminal sequence and mass spectrometric analyses of protein samples isolated from both organs. PCR experiments performed with specific primers, showed that this specie...
