We make use of recent advances natural language processing—specifically Transformer-based neural models and active learning—to identify instances nostalgia U.S. presidential campaign speeches from 1952 2020. then ask what form takes, when it has been most salient, aspects the nation used glorify, how relates populist, nationalist, authoritarian frames. Our findings demonstrate that nostalgic tend not involve rich descriptions bygone historical periods, but instead take brief multivocal statements with a consistent lexical signature. Moreover, is frequently by challenger candidates both parties reinforce populist claims expressions low national pride. This points discursive continuities between actors. Where their respective messaging diverges frame exclusionary nationalist claims, practice limited campaigns (in our data, those Donald Trump). Rather than inventing rhetorical strategies de novo, therefore, appears actors adopt creatively recombine frames already widespread political culture.
