Reckoning the moment of reckoning in spontaneous voluntary movement.

In everyday life, movements are sometimes triggered by external sensory stimuli, like when the traffic light ahead turns from green to red and you move your foot from the gas pedal to the brake pedal in response. But many of our voluntary movements are spontaneous, meaning that they are not tied to any recent stimulus in the current sensory environment. This capacity affords us what Gold and Sh...

Forgiveness and Moral Reckoning

Forgiveness is no simple matter either to execute or to understand. Charles Griswold explores forgiveness both in its guise as a virtue⎯I’ll call it “forgivingness”⎯and as something that’s more difficult to categorize, something like an act or process. Griswold’s Forgiveness provides a classical philosophical analysis of the act or process, “a theory of paradigmatic forgiveness⎯of what forgi...

Dead Reckoning from the Pocket

We present a novel approach to enable dead reckoning in a scenario with unconstrained placement of a device in the user’s trouser pockets. Utilizing the rotation of the device due to body motion, we estimate the user’s walking direction robustly to different placements in the pocket and without additional body-worn sensors.

B-S LEE et al: ADAPTIVE DEAD RECKONING ADAPTIVE DEAD RECKONING ALGORITHMS FOR DISTRIBUTED INTERACTIVE SIMULATION

This paper describes two adaptive algorithms for dead reckoning in Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS). The first algorithm is based on the control mechanism of adaptive adjustment of threshold level and the second on automatic selection of extrapolation equation. Since a fixed threshold cannot adequately handle the dynamic relationships between moving entities, a multi-level threshold sch...

Adaptive Step Length Method of Dead Reckoning

Aimed at the demand of positioning in complicated environments such as indoor and built-up areas, the method of autonomous navigation positioning and orientation based on an adaptive step length model was proposed in this paper. Using an accelerometer placed on the human waist, stride was recognized and the relationship between the step length, stride factor, and walking speed was established. ...
