چکیده
Abstract. Global reanalyses from data assimilation systems are among the most widely used datasets in weather and climate studies, potential vorticity (PV) is invaluable for many studies of dynamical transport processes. We assess how consistently modern represent each other, focusing not only on PV but also process-oriented diagnostics including equivalent latitude calculated PV-based tropopause stratospheric polar vortex characterization. In particular we National Centers Environmental Prediction Climate Forecast System Reanalysis/Climate System, version 2 (CFSR/CFSv2) reanalysis, European Centre Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Interim (ERA-Interim) Japanese Meteorological Agency's 55-year (JRA-55) NASA Modern-Era Retrospective analysis Research Applications, (MERRA-2). Overall, all agrees well with reanalysis ensemble mean, providing some confidence that these recent suitable using diagnostics. Specific where larger differences seen include locations regions have strong gradients (such as around subtropical jets) or sparse high-resolution over Antarctica), vortices during fall formation (especially) spring breakup; sensitive situations such should examine multiple reanalyses.

متن کاملPotential Vorticity as Meridional Coordinate
The dynamical equations of atmospheric flow are written using potential vorticity as the meridional coordinate and potential temperature as the vertical coordinate. Within this system, the atmosphere is divided into undulating tubes bounded by isentropic and constant potential vorticity surfaces, and, under adiabatic and frictionless conditions, the air moves through the tubes without penetrati...

In this paper we derive the quasigeostrophic potential vorticity equations, starting from primitive type equations, as the Rossby number goes to zero, and prove the convergence as long as the limit system has strong enough solutions. We in particular take account of the boundary layers and investigate the existence of global weak solutions of the limit system with physical boundary conditions.
متن کاملMid-tropospheric Frontogenesis and Potential Vorticity
Mid-tropospheric frontogenesis is investigated for a case study in which special three-hourly rawinsonde data are available. Isentropic analyses are generated by objective means. Detailed machine isentropic trajectories lead to the three-dimensional description of the velocity field in space and time accompanying the frontogenesis. Ertel potential vorticity calculations serve as a check on traj...
متن کاملPrecipitating Quasi-Geostrophic Equations and Potential Vorticity
Precipitating versions of the quasi-geostrophic (QG) equations are derived systematically, starting from the equations of a cloud-resolving model. The presence of phase changes of water from vapor to liquid and vice versa leads to important differences from the dry QG case. The precipitating QG (PQG) equations, in their simplest form, have two variables to describe the full system: a potential ...
