RE-DEFINING THREAT TO NATIONAL DEFENCE: CASE STUDY OF INDONESIA-MALAYSIA BORDER DISPUTE IN WEST KALIMANTAN

The country's border areas are not immune from threats to national defense, both traditionally and non-traditionally. One of the is Entikong, which located in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. This area directly adjacent State Sarawak, East Malaysia. tend be considered vulnerable military such as territorial invasions. However, defense can threatened by non-traditional that affect state sovereignty through nationalism its people. study uses qualitative methods analyzing primary secondary data field observations, interviews, results focus group discussions with a number informants who have been determined using purposive technique. Non-traditional security problems Entikong people's economic problems, narcotics smuggling, foreign commodities, identity crises, others sense nationalism. There challenges efforts deal issues, aspects budget, technology, size, inter-agency coordination. Therefore, only aspect, currently need special attention. Seeing biggest threat improvements made prevent derived aspect authorized institutions. requires coordination, commitment support central/provincial/regional government, local civil society.
