Rapid prediction of cementitious initial sorptivity via surface wettability

چکیده

Abstract The tendency of cementitious systems to absorb and transmit liquid through capillary pores is often characterized by initial sorptivity, which an important indicator long-term durability. However, sorptivity measurements, are based on the continuous mass change specimens exposed water, labor-intensive (up 6 h measurements). Here, we exploit fundamental surface-wetting characteristics estimate their in a rapid fashion, i.e., matter few minutes. In series 63 distinct paste varying w/c ratios (0.4–0.8), subject range curing periods (1–7d), establish strong correlations (adjusted R 2 ≥ 0.9) between (~6 h) dynamics drop spreading (contact angle ~0.5 s, residence time <10 min). These results elucidate pathways estimating durability broad variety hydrated matrices.

Control of surface wettability via strain engineering

Reversible control of surface wettability has wide applications in lab-on-chip systems, tunable optical lenses, and microfluidic tools. Using a graphene sheet as a sample material and molecular dynamic simulations, we demonstrate that strain engineering can serve as an effective way to control the surface wettability. The contact angles θ of water droplets on a graphene vary from 72.5◦ to 106◦ ...

Effect of Cold Plasma-Surface Modification on Surface Wettability and Initial Cell Attachment

A thin coating of hexamethyldisiloxane and subsequent O2-plasma treatment was performed on mirror-polished titanium in order to regulate the wide range of wettability including 106 and almost 0 degrees of contact angles. The adsorption behavior of fibronectin and albumin in both individual and competitive mode, and initial attachment of fibroblasts and osteoblasts were investigated. Individuall...

Effects of initial surface wettability on biofilm formation and subsequent settlement of Hydroides elegans.

Hydroides elegans is a major fouling organism in tropical waters around the world, including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. To determine the importance of initial surface characteristics on biofilm community composition and subsequent colonization by larvae of H. elegans, the settlement and recruitment of larvae to biofilmed surfaces with six different initial surface wettabilities were tested in Pearl ...

Altering Emulsion Stability with Heterogeneous Surface Wettability

Emulsions-liquid droplets dispersed in another immiscible liquid-are widely used in a broad spectrum of applications, including food, personal care, agrochemical, and pharmaceutical products. Emulsions are also commonly present in natural crude oil, hampering the production and quality of petroleum fuels. The stability of emulsions plays a crucial role in their applications, but controlling the...
