Unravelling the timing and rate of subduction-zone metamorphism H2O release requires linking time to compositional changes petrogenetic indicator minerals in blueschists eclogites. Garnet is a key mineral this regard, as it forms by, records, H2O-releasing reactions that can be linked pressure temperature conditions. These placed using chronology. Bulk-or multi-grain ages are norm garnet While these provide important precise constraints on across both facies, duration, rates style growth—crucial parameters petrological geochemical evolution subducting oceanic crust—remain unconstrained. A laser ablation microanalysis system has been developed that can analyze trace elements with a sensitivity in the ppb range, using a CETAC LSX-200 laser ablation system with a Finnigan Element. This capability has been applied to a set of iron meteorites to demonstrate the laser microprobe's analytical capability for the determination of platinum group elements (PGEs) with a spatial resolution...
متن کاملWhole-rock Geochemistry and Metamorphism of Blueschist/eclogite-facies Mafic Rocks on Syros, Cyclades, Greece
The island of Syros consists largely of possibly-repeated sequences of glaucophane-bearing calcareous schists, mafic schists, dolomite marbles, and calcite marbles containing abundant aragonite pseudomorphs (Dixon, 1969; Hecht, 1984). Several discrete, fault-bounded packages of blueschist/eclogite-facies mafic rocks with minor serpentinite are also found on the island. Although the mafic rocks ...
متن کاملModeling Major and Trace Element Chemistry of Zoned Metal Grains
Introduction: The compositional variations [1 and references therein] in the zoned metal grains from the CH and CB chondrites are generally interpreted as unequivocal evidence for their condensation from a parcel of H 2-rich gas with solar or somewhat increased dust/gas (D/G) ratios [2,3]. Although different origins of such gas are discussed [e.g., 4-7], its high enrichment in H 2 [8] and low a...
متن کاملEARLY THERMAL EVOLUTION AND SIZES OF THE HED AND MESOSIDERITE PARENT BODIES: NEW CONSTRAINTS FROM Lu-Hf CHRONOLOGY
Introduction: The HEDs make up the largest suite of crustal igneous rocks available from asteroids. Sili-cate clasts in the mesosiderite metal-silicate breccias are also dominated by crustal rocks that resemble the HEDs in many ways. Silicate petrology in both groups of meteorites range from strikingly similar fine-grained basalts to coarse grained orthopyroxenites. Mesosid-erites furthermore c...
متن کاملEffects of sample storage and shell orientation on LA-ICPMS trace element measurements on deep-sea mussels
Geochemical markers are being increasingly applied to fundamental questions in population and community ecology in marine habitats because they allow inferences on individuals dispersal, but vital effects, small sample size and instrumental limitation are still challenging particularly in deep-sea studies. Here we use shells of the deep-sea bivalve Idas modiolaeformis to assess potential effect...
