Ramped pyrolysis radiocarbon dating of lime lumps: Establishing the earliest mortar-based construction phase of Turku cathedral, Finland

چکیده
Ramped pyrolysis radiocarbon dating was carried out on lime lumps from what believed to be the oldest remains of Turku Cathedral, Finland, first sacristy. Lumps extracted bulk mortar five sampling locations were analysed. For each sample, 5–6 fractions CO2 different temperature dated. One samples exhibited significant contamination for its lowest fractions. remaining samples, age-temperature profiles well-behaved, exhibiting a plateau dates that in statistical agreement and indicative where only single carbonate source (lime binder construction phase) is contributing dates. combined age resulted calibrated with large probability distribution mode (typically > 85% probability) late 13th century AD. Combining all (21 agreement, χ2-test: df = 20, T 7.1, 5% 31.4) provided an 709 ± 11 yr BP 1276–1296 cal. AD (95.4%). This result finds excellent historical sources, previous work, date organic material also embedded some mortar. The results demonstrate ramped pyrolysis, applied well-selected lumps, (A) useful diagnostic tool establishing how reliable sample (B) accurate, precise, repeatable technique further confirm Cathedral's sacristy constructed stone Additionally, using Cathedral as case study, two Bayesian models presented illustrate how, general, statistics might, future, examine building dynamics (chronologically) ordered or unordered derived

High-precision Radiocarbon Dating of the Construction Phase of Oakbank Crannog, Loch Tay, Perthshire
Many of the Loch Tay crannogs were built in the Early Iron Age and so calibration of the radiocarbon ages produces very broad calendar age ranges due to the well-documented Hallstatt plateau in the calibration curve. However, the large oak timbers that were used in the construction of some of the crannogs potentially provide a means of improving the precision of the dating through subdividing t...
