Radiative Transfer Modeling of Chang’e-4 Spectroscopic Observations and Interpretation of the South Pole-Aitken Compositional Anomaly

چکیده

Abstract Chang’e-4 landed in the Von Kármán basaltic zone affected by Finsen ejecta from South Pole-Aitken (SPA) “compositional anomaly” (SPACA), providing an opportunity to untangle origin of SPACA. We developed a mineral abundance unmixing model and built spectral library composed mixtures plagioclase, low-Ca pyroxene, high-Ca olivine. Based on abundances returned our model, average plagioclase (60.4 vol.%) SPACA is beyond high-plagioclase end mineralogical range SPA impact melt differentiation products would require additional contribution crustal materials. suggest that either crust was not entirely removed SPA-forming or post-SPA basins fed feldspathic materials back onto basin floor. Our analyses indicate surface regolith mixture 70.2% 29.8% Fe- incompatible-element-enriched

A Serenitatis origin for the Imbrian grooves and South Pole-Aitken thorium anomaly

The northwest corner of the MoonÕs South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin contains a high abundance of thorium and a unique Imbrian aged geomorphologic unit that consists of Ògrooves and moundsÓ (referred to here as the Imbrian grooves). Because the location of these features are almost antipodal to the Imbrium basin, where high-thorium ejecta and seismic energy are expected to have converged, an Imbriu...

Impact melt differentiation in the South Pole-Aitken basin_ Some observations and speculations

The stratigraphy of the South-Pole Aitken basin (SPA) interior is consistent with that of a massive impact melt sheet that differentiated to form cumulates. Spectroscopic and geophysical constraints on the stratigraphy of SPA suggest a 12.5 km thick layer of norite above ultramafic pyroxenite and dunite layers. A similar stratigraphy is produced from differentiation by crystal settling of a 50 ...

Elliptical structure of the lunar South Pole-Aitken basin

The South Pole-Aitken basin (SP-A) is the largest and oldest basin on the Moon. The basin has usually been interpreted to exhibit a degraded circular structure, but here we demonstrate that the topography, iron and thorium signatures of the basin are well described by ellipses with axes measuring 2400 by 2050 km and centered at 53 , 191 E. Topography, abundances of iron, thorium, and the distri...
