Radiative pulsed L-mode operation in ARC-class reactors

Abstract A new ARC-class, highly-radiative, pulsed, L-mode, burning plasma scenario is developed and evaluated as a candidate for future tokamak reactors. Pulsed inductive operation alleviates the stringent current drive requirements of steady-state reactors, in L-mode affords ELM-free access to ∼ 90 % core radiation fractions, significantly reducing divertor power handling requirements. In this configuration fusion density can be maximized despite confinement by utilizing high-field increase densities current. This allows us obtain high gain robust scenarios compact devices with P fus > 1000 MW low confinement. We demonstrate feasibility such here; first showing that they avoid violating 0D limits, then performing self-consistent integrated simulations flattop including neoclassical turbulent transport, magnetic equilibrium, radiofrequency models. Finally we examine potential effect introducing negative triangularity model. Our results show radiative pulsed are promising alternative typical steady state advanced which have dominated reactor development.
