Quasi-Hyperbolic Present Bias: A Meta-Analysis

چکیده
Quasi-hyperbolic discounting is one of the most well-known and widely-used models to capture self-control problems in economics literature. The underlying assumption this model that agents have a present bias toward current consumption such all future rewards are downweighed relative (in addition standard exponential for length delay). We report meta-analytic dataset estimates parameter β based on searches major research databases (62 papers with 81 total). find literature shows people average biased both monetary (β = 0.82, 95% confidence interval [0.74, 0.90]) nonmonetary 0.66, [0.51, 0.85]) but substantial heterogeneity exists across studies. source comes from subject pool, elicitation methodology, geographical location, payment method, mode data collection (e.g. laboratory or field), reward type. There evidence selective reporting publication direction overestimating strength present-bias (making smaller), still after correcting these issues (for money 0.87 [0.82, 0.92] reporting).

Present-bias, quasi-hyperbolic discounting, and fixed costs
Article history: Received 28 January 2008 Available online xxxx JEL classification: C91 D03 D90 In this paper we elicit preferences for money–time pairs via experimental techniques. We estimate a general specification of discounting that nests exponential and hyperbolic discounting, as well as various forms of present bias, including quasi-hyperbolic discounting. We find that discount rates are...
متن کاملPublication Bias in Meta-Analysis
Publication bias is the term for what occurs whenever the research that appears in the published literature is systematically unrepresentative of the population of completed studies. Simply put, when the research that is readily available differs in its results from the results of all the research that has been done in an area, readers and reviewers of that research are in danger of drawing the...
متن کاملA Simple Axiomatization of Quasi-hyperbolic Discounting∗
This paper provides a novel axiomatization of quasi-hyperbolic discounting, which imposes consistency restrictions directly on the intertemporal tradeoffs. The experimental design proposed in this paper will be useful for experimental work since it renders the short-run discount factor elicitation independent of the utility function. This makes comparisons of impatience across a spectrum of dif...

متن کاملComplex hyperbolic quasi-Fuchsian groups
A complex hyperbolic quasi-Fuchsian group is a discrete, faithful, type preserving and geometrically finite representation of a surface group as a subgroup of the group of holomorphic isometries of complex hyperbolic space. Such groups are direct complex hyperbolic generalisations of quasi-Fuchsian groups in three dimensional (real) hyperbolic geometry. In this article we present the current st...
