Quartz Powder Valorisation in White Self-Compacting Concrete: Mortar Level Study

Quartz powder (QP) from mining exploration has increased, and valorisation solutions are sought. QP incorporation in structural concrete is an exciting strategy for the growth sustainable development of industry, waste management environmental protection. This work addresses a Portuguese company on powder-type self-compacting architectural purposes, combining light colour quartz with white cement. As such, was used as partial cement replacement, acting filler mortars (SCWM) pastes (SCWP). Firstly, characterised by chemical, physical morphological properties. Afterwards, SCWM 10% Portland were produced and, replacement limestone fillers, commercially available, comparison purposes. The following engineering properties evaluated, flowability viscosity, electrical resistivity, porosity mechanical strength. In equivalent samples, heat hydration accessed. Finally, architectonic element prototype using SCWM-QP, aesthetics evaluated. All reached adequate deformability viscosity self-compaction. hardened state, compressive strength, resistivity water-permeable presented similar results incorporating fillers. isothermal calorimetry revealed slight desacceleration SCWP QP. major findings this study confirm feasibility QP, meeting required performance while reducing resource depletion industry adding value to by-product.
