Quantifying the Rightward Bias Extent of Tropical Cyclones' Cold Wakes

چکیده
Abstract Although the cold wake of tropical cyclones (TCs) is recognized to be typically rightward biased relative TC track (in North Hemisphere), it remains unclear what extent bias should for specified TCs. Based on numerical simulations and observational statistics, this study shows that distance closely related latitude, translation speed radius maximum wind (RMW) a TC, but independent from surface radial profile outside RMW, namely intensity size. A semi‐empirical equation derived represent wakes. For TCs with slower speed, smaller or at higher latitudes, wakes are less asymmetric track. Atmospheric also show tends weaker more as closer center.

The Dynamics of Tropical Cyclones
The specific objectives of the current effort are: 1. To continue our study of the dynamical processes in tropical cyclones responsible for looping or erratic motion; 2. To continue the development of methods for (a) the introduction of synthetic tropical-cyclone-scale vortices in operational forecast models and (b) ensemble forecasting of tropical cyclones; 3. To continue a sensitivity study o...
متن کاملClouds in Tropical Cyclones
Clouds within the inner regions of tropical cyclones are unlike those anywhere else in the atmosphere. Convective clouds contributing to cyclogenesis have rotational and deep intense updrafts but tend to have relatively weak downdrafts. Within the eyes of mature tropical cyclones, stratus clouds top a boundary layer capped by subsidence. An outward-sloping eyewall cloud is controlled by adjustm...
متن کاملTargeted Observation of Tropical Cyclones
The advance in targeted observations of tropical cyclone movement is reviewed in this article. The targeted observations from DOTSTAR (Dropwindsonde Observations for Typhoon Surveillance near the Taiwan Region) in understanding and improving the tropical cyclone track predictability is highlighted, along with the progress of the field program of THORPEX-PARC in the summer of 2008. The impact of...
متن کاملHelical organization of tropical cyclones
In this work we consider a helical flow organization on small and large space scales in a forming tropical cyclone and offer a quantitative analysis for early stages in evolution of large-scale helical vortex based on diagnosis of a set of integral helical and energetic characteristics. Using the data from a near cloud-resolving numerical simulation by Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS...
متن کاملThe Extratropical Transition of Tropical Cyclones
The objective is to investigate the physical processes that occur as a tropical cyclone interacts with the environment such that intensity and structure changes occur. Specific interactions being studied are with baroclinic environments in the midlatitudes during extratropical transition. During extratropical transition, radical changes to the storm structure occur as vertical wind shear and in...
