Quantifying lateral bedrock erosion caused during a hyperconcentrated flow in a narrow alpine limestone gorge

چکیده

Here, we show results of an unprecedented LiDAR dataset quantitatively determining the lateral bedrock erosion a narrow limestone gorge during extreme hyperconcentrated flow. The comparison two point clouds prior and post to June 15 th flow event provide information about massive breakout particles abrasion channel walls. With multiscale model cloud analysis, can that from 0.0001 m 3 3.5 were eroded subvertical A total 20.9 was in observable part with 90 % being smaller than 0.15 . We delimited main processes event: shearing reach into predefined failure surfaces, along whole channel, detectable by if changes are > cm. This study provides quantitative evidence for rock alpine gorges could also control formation evolution over Holocene/Lateglacial time scales.

Weathering and erosion of fractured bedrock systems

We explore the contribution of fractures (joints) in controlling the rate of weathering advance for a low-porosity rock by using methods of homogenization to create averaged weathering equations. The rate of advance of the weathering front can be expressed as the same rate observed in non-fractured media (or in an individual block) divided by the volume fraction of nonfractured blocks in the fr...

Erosion by an Alpine glacier.

Assessing the impact of glaciation on Earth's surface requires understanding glacial erosion processes. Developing erosion theories is challenging because of the complex nature of the erosion processes and the difficulty of examining the ice/bedrock interface of contemporary glaciers. We demonstrate that the glacial erosion rate is proportional to the ice-sliding velocity squared, by quantifyin...

Groundwater flow through a Miliolite limestone

This paper describes a study of groundwater flow in a coastal Miliolite limestone aquifer in western India. An examination of field information suggested that the transmissivity of the aquifer varies significantly between high and low groundwater heads. Pumping tests indicate that this is due to the development of major fissures in the upper part of the aquifer. A regional groundwater model wit...

Feedbacks between erosion and sediment transport in experimental bedrock channels

Natural bedrock rivers flow in self-formed channels and form diverse erosional morphologies. The parameters that collectively define channel morphology (e.g. width, slope, bed roughness, bedrock exposure, sediment size distribution) all influence river incision rates and dynamically adjust in poorly understood ways to imposed fluid and sediment fluxes. To explore the mechanics of river incision...

Quantifying Information Flow During Emergencies

Recent advances on human dynamics have focused on the normal patterns of human activities, with the quantitative understanding of human behavior under extreme events remaining a crucial missing chapter. This has a wide array of potential applications, ranging from emergency response and detection to traffic control and management. Previous studies have shown that human communications are both t...
