Quantifying Illegal Extraction of Sea Turtles in Costa Rica

چکیده
Estimates of illegal wildlife trade vary significantly and are often based on incomplete datasets, inferences from CITES permits or customs seizures. As a result, annual global estimates can by several billions US dollars. Translating these figures into species extraction rates is equally challenging, estimating take accurately not achievable for many species. Due to their nesting strategies that allow census data collection, sea turtles offer an exception. On the Caribbean coast Costa Rica, three turtle (leatherback, Dermochelys coriacea; green, Chelonia mydas ; hawksbill, Eretmochelys imbricata ) exploited poachers. Despite consumption eggs meat being illegal, they consumed as cultural food source seasonal treat. Conservation programmes monitor beaches, collect abundance record poaching events. availability robust long-term quantifying rate has yet be undertaken. Using globally important beach, Tortuguero, well beaches Playa Norte Pacuare we modelled spatial temporal distribution Here, present 2006 2019 stretch coastline covering c.37 km. We identified hotspots correlated with populated areas. While persisted over time, found declining at each our sites. However, urge caution when interpreting this result impact varies between Given low pressure leatherback hawksbill far greater than abundant green turtles. attribute decline in supply-side conservation interventions place beaches. Lack of xenoestrogen-induced vitellogenin in male olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) from the Pacific coast of Costa Rica
Olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) distribute widely throughout Eastern Pacific (EP) waters. During reproduction these animals aggregate near coastal waters where they may be exposed to industrial or agrochemical environmental pollutants that may disrupt the endocrine system of these reptiles. One group of compounds of concern is the persistent organic pollutants (POPs), some of w...

Monticellius indicum Mehra, 1939, is redescribed from the heart of green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) at Tortuguero National Park, Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Of the 40 green turtles examined, only 5 (12.5%) were infected with a mean intensity of 1.6. Our specimens are consistent with the original description based on a single fluke from the heart of the same host species in the Arabian Sea,...

Although the sea turtles have long been familiar and even iconic to marine biologists, many aspects of their ecology remain unaddressed. The present study is the first of the epizoic diatom community covering the olive ridley turtle's (Lepidochelys olivacea) carapace and the first describing diatoms living on sea turtles in general, with the primary objective of providing detailed information o...
