Quantification of geodetic strain rate uncertainties and implications for seismic hazard estimates

چکیده
Summary Geodetic velocity data provide first-order constraints on crustal surface strain rates, which in turn are linked to seismic hazard. Estimating the 2D tensor everywhere requires knowledge of field everywhere, while geodetic such as Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) only have spatially scattered measurements Earth. To use these estimate some type interpolation is required. In this study, we review methodologies for rate estimation and compare a suite methods, including new implementation based geostatistical method kriging, variation between methods with uncertainty one method. We calculate rates southern California using GNSS five different understand sources variability inferred rates. Uncertainty related noise station spacing (aleatoric uncertainty) minimal where dense maximum far from observations. Differences epistemic uncertainty, usually highest areas high due differences how gradients handled by methods. Parameter choices, unsurprisingly, strong influence field, propose traditional L-curve approach quantifying inherent trade-off fit models that reflective tectonic Doing so, find total representative be roughly 40 per cent, much lower value than 100 cent was found previous studies (Hearn et al., 2010). Using multiple tune parameters provides better understanding range acceptable given field. Finally, present an open-source Python package (Materna 2021) calculating Strain_2D, allows same model grid used can extended other community, interface comparing models, statistics, estimating dataset.

Effects of Magnitude Uncertainties on Seismic Hazard Estimates
The standard probability tree methodology of probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) allows for the explicit treatment of many kinds of uncertainty. These include both epistemic uncertainty (e.g., uncertainty in the parameters of the frequency-magnitude relation for a given source region, and in the form and parameters of relations for attenuation of strong shaking) and aleatory uncertai...
متن کاملPoisson model for earthquake frequency uncertainties in seismic hazard analysis
Frequency-magnitude distributions, and their associated uncertainties, are of key importance in statistical seismology. When fitting these distributions , the assumption of Gaussian residuals is invalid since event numbers are both discrete and of unequal variance. In general, the observed number in any given magnitude range is described by a binomial distribution which, given a large total num...

The present study was conducted to determine peak ground acceleration (PGA) over bedrock in probabilistic analysis methods for the seismic hazard and uniform hazard spectra at different hazard levels for Esfahan city. A series of statistics containing historical and instrumental seismic data covering from the 8th century A.D. to the now up to a radius of 200 km was employed and seismic sources ...

[1] We document geodetic strain across the Nepal Himalaya using GPS times series from 30 stations in Nepal and southern Tibet, in addition to previously published campaign GPS points and leveling data and determine the pattern of interseismic coupling on the Main Himalayan Thrust fault (MHT). The noise on the daily GPS positions is modeled as a combination of white and colored noise, in order t...
متن کاملUncertainties in Seismic Hazard Analysis, High-Dimensional Visualization and Information Theory
Seismic hazard analysis, in particular in regions of low to moderate seismicity, is known to be subject to large amounts of uncertainties. According to their nature and origin, these can be classifi ed as either aleatory (describing intrinsic variabilities of processes) or epistemic (related to the lack of knowledge). Truely aleatory uncertainties are irreducible and will always be an indispens...
