This is a review of the concepts purpose, direction, and objective in discipline thermodynamics, which pillar physics, natural sciences, life science, engineering science. Reviewed relentless evolution this toward accounting for evolutionary design with establishing concept purpose methodologies modeling, analysis, teaching, optimization. Evolution change after flow access, direction time, purpose. does not have an ‘end’. In already defining feature methods that emerged to guide facilitate generation, distribution, use motive power, heating, cooling: thermodynamic optimization, exergy-based (i.e., exergetic, exergoeconomic, exergoenvironmental analysis), entropy generation minimization, extended exergy, environomics, thermoecology, finite time pinch animal design, geophysical constructal law. What distinguishes these approaches are performance evaluation used each method.
