Pulsed-Neutron Die-Away Experiments for Plastics and Neutron Thermal Scattering Laws

چکیده
Pulsed-neutron die-away (PNDA) experiments can be useful benchmarks to validate neutron thermal scattering laws (TSLs). The experiment uses a generator impinge short (∼10 −4 s), mono-energetic pulse on target sample. After the pulse, population within sample moderates and reaches equilibrium with fundamental spatial mode characteristic decay-time eigenvalue. eigenvalue extracted from experimental measurements of flux used as an integral parameter in validation. For certain materials geometric configurations, is heavily influenced by only material. that reason, PNDA have higher sensitivity TSLs than commonly available critical experiments. Herein, we present results for series new conducted at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory plastic materials, e.g. high-density polyethylene Lucite. We compare parameters simulated report trends biases. evaluate bias different Monte Carlo transport codes (MCNP6.2 Mercury) show no significant differences between two codes.

Benchmarking Monte Carlo Simulations of Thermal Neutron Kinetics and Differential Die-away Analysis
Differential Die-Away Analysis (DDAA) is a very effective technique for detection of special nuclear material (SNM). It is based on fission neutrons that are detected with a time constant characteristic of the thermal neutron that created them. The presence of fast neutrons with this slow die-away time is a positive indication of the presence of SNM in the inspected cargo. Results are presented...
متن کاملApplications of Phonon Extinction Rules for Inelastic Neutron Scattering and Thermal Diffuse Scattering Experiments
The determination of crystal phonon frequencies through experiments of coherent inelastic neutron scattering is now a rather standard technique in solid state physics which, in principle, allow the determination of the phonon spectra. However, a proper interpretation of the results and/or an unambiguous comparison with theoretical predictions requires in many cases additional information on the...

Polarized neutron study of the spin dynamics for a Heisenberg antiferromagnet with easy-axis anisotropy, CsNiCl3, clearly demonstrates the almost isotropic character of the system. The study also revealed a difference between the observed and the calculated spin wave dispersion using the classical spin wave theory for T << 4.8 K and T > 4.8 K. This may be interpreted as a quantum effect on the ...

Detection of landmines using nuclear techniques has been studied extensively since the late 1940s. Nuclear techniques look at either a return radiation, which is characteristic of explosive components that are infrequently found in soil (e.g., nitrogen or carbon), or an intensity change of a noncharacteristic scattered radiation, which is a function of a parameter that differs between soil and ...
متن کاملNovel microstrip detectors and data acquisition strategies for thermal neutron imaging at the next generation pulsed neutron sources
For thermal neutron imaging at the next generation of high-flux pulsed neutron sources microstrip detectors with solid state neutron converter foils are presently being developed in different laboratories with the objective to improve the resolution and count rate limits by orders of magnitude in comparison with the presently available neutron detector types, in particular compared to multiwire...
