چکیده

Pattern formation driven by differential strain in constrained elastic systems is a common motif many technological and biological systems. Here we introduce biologically motivated case of patterning that allows us to explore the conditions for existence local puckering global wrinkling patterns: soft growing composite ring adhered elastically constraining rigid ring. We how growth resistance shear stretching deformations induced adherence lead range phenomena include uniform aperture-like modes, localized puckers are Nambu–Goldstone-like modes wrinkles system. Our analysis combines computer simulations discrete rod model with nonlinear stability equations continuum limit. provide phase diagrams scaling relations reveal nature extent deformation patterns. Overall, our study reveals geometry mechanics conspire yield rich phenomenology could serve as guide design programmable while being relevant mechanical basis morphogenesis.
