Psychiatric hospitalization among offenders: a retrospective study in the acute psychiatric ward in Monza, Italy

Introduction The closure of forensic psychiatric hospitals and the conversion to a residential model care based on secure units in community (REMS) has made Italy first only country world have followed principles deinstitutionalization movement. Following reform, several management issues emerged, such as creation long waiting lists for admission REMS. Improper hospitalization Acute Psychiatric Units (SPDC) often been used address this issue. In addition, handover inmates’ Mental Health Departments (DSMD’s) posed further challenges. To date, field received little attention from international literature. Objectives Description analysis sample offender inpatients hospitalized an acute unit. Methods We conducted retrospective study including male offenders admitted SPDC San Gerardo Hospital (ASST Monza), between January 2007 September 2022. Data was performed by using SPSS.
