Proximity-Based Haptic Feedback for Collaborative Robotic Needle Insertion

چکیده
Abstract Collaborative robotic needle insertions have the potential to improve placement accuracy and safety, e.g., during epidural anesthesia. Epidural anesthesia provides effective regional pain management but can lead serious complications, such as nerve injury or cerebrospinal fluid leakage. Robotic assistance might prevent inadvertent puncture by providing haptic feedback physician. Haptic be realized on basis of force measurements at needle. However, contact should avoided for delicate structures. We propose a proximity-based method provide prior contact. measure distance boundary layers, visualize proximity operator further it resistance. compare our approach based forces visual without haptics. Participants are asked realize with each three modes. use phantoms that mimic structures punctured show improves placement, only reduces accidental puncture. The rate is 62% force-based feedback, 60% 6% feedback. Final inside space achieved in 38%, 70% 96% haptic, respectively. Our results suggest could safety context

متن کاملRobotic Haptic Proxies for Collaborative Virtual Reality
We propose a new approach for interaction in Virtual Reality (VR) using mobile robots as proxies for haptic feedback. This approach allows VR users to have the experience of sharing and manipulating tangible physical objects with remote collaborators. Because participants do not directly observe the robotic proxies, the mapping between them and the virtual objects is not required to be direct. ...
متن کاملExperimental evaluation of magnified haptic feedback for robot-assisted needle insertion and palpation.
BACKGROUND Haptic feedback has been proven to play a key role in enhancing the performance of teleoperated medical procedures. However, due to safety issues, commercially-available medical robots do not currently provide the clinician with haptic feedback. METHODS This work presents the experimental evaluation of a teleoperation system for robot-assisted medical procedures able to provide mag...
متن کاملRobotic needle insertion: effects of friction and needle geometry
Two experiments were performed to determine the effects of friction and needle geometry during robotic needle insertion into soft tissues. In Experiment I, friction forces along the instrument axis were characterized during needle insertion into bovine liver under CT fluoroscopic imaging. Because the relative velocity of the tissue and needle affect viscous and Coulomb friction, the needle inse...
متن کاملThe Effect of Visual and Haptic Feedback on Manual and Teleoperated Needle Insertion
In this paper, we present a study that evaluates the effect of visual and haptic feedbacks and their relevance to human performance in a needle insertion task. A virtual needle insertion simulator with a four-layer tissue model (skin, fat, muscle, and bone) and haptic feedback is used for perceptual experiments. The task was to detect the puncture of a particular layer using haptic and visual c...
