Provenance and recycling of Sahara Desert sand

چکیده

We here present the first comprehensive provenance study of Sahara Desert using a combination multiple proxies and state-of-the-art statistical analysis. Our dataset comprises 44 aeolian-dune samples, collected across region from 12°N (Nigeria) to 34°N (Tunisia) 33°E (Egypt) 16°W (Mauritania) characterized by bulk-petrography, heavy-mineral, detrital-zircon UPb geochronology analyses. A set tools including Multidimensional Scaling, Correspondence Analysis, Individual Difference General Procrustes Analysis was applied discriminate among sample groups with purpose reveal meaningful compositional patterns infer sediment transport pathways on geological scale. The overall homogenity sand however, precluded detailed narrative. Saharan dune fields are, few local exceptions, composed pure quartzose very poor heavy-mineral suites dominated durable zircon, tourmaline, rutile. Some feldspars, amphibole, epidote, garnet, or staurolite occur closer basement exposures, carbonate grains, clinopyroxene olivine near basaltic field in Libya. Relatively varied compositions also characterize along Nile Valley southern front Anti-Atlas fold belt Morocco. Otherwise, Sahel Mediterranean Sea River Atlantic Ocean, consists nearly exclusively quartz minerals. These have been concentrated through cycles erosion, deposition, diagenesis Phanerozoic siliciclastic rocks during long period relative tectonic quiescence that followed Neoproterozoic Pan-African orogeny, last episode major crustal growth region. principal ultimate source recycled is held be represented thick blanket quartz-rich sandstones were deposited Cambro-Ordovician newly formed Arabian-Nubian Shield east Mauritania west. Durability zircon grains their likelihood older sedimentary argues against assumption, too often implicitly taken for granted studies based ages, age distribution reflects existing at time deposition rather than inheritance remote landscapes past.

Give the Sahara desert to a health care administrator and a few weeks later he will have to import sand.

Ziegenfuss and Sassani claimed that health administration education “would be helpful to clinicians.” Sadly, this claim can be added to the long list of redisorganization examples. In contrast, education in etymology and logic may be helpful to professors of management. Clinician means at bedside; the patient needs clinicians who possess sufficient knowledge and clinical skills to make and exec...

Verification of Sciamachy’s Polarisation Correction over the Sahara Desert

The justification for doing the work presented in this paper lies in the recent and disturbing rumours regarding the reflectivity of the current SCIAMACHY Level 1b product. The reflectivity was claimed to show an overall 20-percent loss in magnitude compared to GOME. We will show that the reported discrepancy in the reflectivity is indeed not a fictional one, but that it is certainly not caused...

A Prehistoric Solar Observatory in the Middle of Sahara Desert

The prehistoric stone funerary monuments of the Sahara desert, distributed in a huge geographical area, had been created in several different shapes. Some of them have a design that looks like a keyhole, and therefore are known as keyhole tombs. Since they are facing the sunrise, these tombs were also considered as places for the worship of the sun. In this paper, we show that one of them, in A...

Quantifying sand provenance and erosion (Marsyandi River, Nepal Himalaya)

We use petrographic and mineralogical data on modern sediments to investigate erosion patterns in the Marsyandi basin of the central Himalaya, a privileged natural laboratory in which a series of multidisciplinary geomorphological, sedimentological, geochemical and geochronological studies have been recently carried out to unravel the interrelationships between tectonic, climatic and sedimentar...

Ancient watercourses and biogeography of the Sahara explain the peopling of the desert.

Evidence increasingly suggests that sub-Saharan Africa is at the center of human evolution and understanding routes of dispersal "out of Africa" is thus becoming increasingly important. The Sahara Desert is considered by many to be an obstacle to these dispersals and a Nile corridor route has been proposed to cross it. Here we provide evidence that the Sahara was not an effective barrier and in...
