Protecting the ego: Motivated information selection and updating

We investigate whether individuals self-select feedback that allows them to maintain their motivated beliefs. In our lab experiment, subjects can choose the information structure gives regarding rank in IQ distribution (ego-relevant treatment) or a random number (control). Although beliefs are incentivized, less likely select most informative ego-relevant treatment. Instead, many structures which negative is salient. When receiving with lower salience update less, but only treatment and not control. Hence, results suggest sort themselves into allow misinterpret self-serving way. Consequently, remain on average overconfident despite feedback.
