چکیده

We, the Haíłzaqv, Kitasoo Xai'xais, Nuxalk and Wuikinuxv First Nations, are traditional stewards of our territories in Central Coast British Columbia, Canada. Our laws obligate us to manage protect for current future generations. Spatial management is inherent cultures through Hereditary Chief governance system, which specific people within a lineage inherit rights responsibilities stewarding areas. Since 19th century, we have been experiencing cultural disruptions caused by settler colonialism, now worsened declines marine species vital cultures. These reflect fishery impacts exacerbated climate change. Western fisheries focuses on maximum sustained yields (MSY), ignoring body size that disrupt food webs diminish population productivity vertebrate invertebrate taxa, thereby eroding resilience The worldview encompassed MSY framework—take most you can without compromising exploitation while assuming no environmental change—is antithesis ours—take only what need leave lots ecosystem. Furthermore, standard stock assessments do not account uncertainties change effects distributions productivity, many by-catch unassessed. Consistent with knowledge, scientific evidence indicates protected areas (MPAs), coupled other measures reduce fishing mortality, restore exploited species, safeguard biodiversity contribute sustainability. Evaluating Threats in Multinational Marine Ecosystems: A Coast Salish First Nations and Tribal Perspective

Despite the merit of managing natural resources on the scale of ecosystems, evaluating threats and managing risk in ecosystems that span multiple countries or jurisdictions can be challenging. This requires each government involved to consider actions in concert with actions being taken in other countries by co-managing entities. Multiple proposed fossil fuel-related and port development projec...

Spatial and temporal trends in brominated flame retardants in seabirds from the Pacific coast of Canada.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) are bioaccumulative flame retardants. PBDEs increased in many ecosystems during the late 20th century, but recently have declined in some environments. To examine trends in the northern Pacific, we analysed PBDEs, HBCDD and carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) to account for dietary effects in archived eggs...

Teach Our Children: Stroke Education for Indigenous Children, First Nations, Ontario, Canada, 2009–2012

BACKGROUND Because of the heightened risk for stroke among indigenous people, we conducted this multiyear community case study from 2009 through 2012 to address stroke education needs among children aged 11 to 13 years residing in northern urban, rural, and remote First Nations in Ontario, Canada. The goal was to determine what young people understand about stroke and to develop an age-appropri...

Chemical Study of Several Marine Mollusks of the Pacific Coast.*

The marine invertebrate forms of animal life have not often been the subject of chemical investigation. Lacking, as a class, the greater freedom of movement and the more highly organized nervous and circulatory systems which the possession of a bony skeleton allows, these forms, in general, are more sluggish in their metabolic activities, less responsive to chemical influences, and less attract...
