Project Lyra: A mission to 1I/’Oumuamua without Solar Oberth Manoeuvre

چکیده
To settle the question of nature interstellar object 1I/’Oumuamua requires in-situ observations via a spacecraft, as is already out range existing telescopes. Most previous proposals for reaching using near-term technologies are based on Solar Oberth Manoeuvre (SOM), trajectories without SOM generally significantly inferior in terms lower mission duration and higher total velocity requirement. While allows huge gains, it also technically challenging thereby increases programmatic mission-related risks. In this paper, we identify an alternative route to 1I/’Oumuamua, launch 2028, which does not require but has similar performance missions with SOM. It instead employs Jupiter (JOM) time flight around 26 years or so. The efficacy trajectory result reducing ΔV by exploiting VEEGA sequence. 15.8 kms−1 corresponding payload mass 115 kg SLS Block 1B 241 2. A further advantage JOM that arrival speed relative approximately 18 kms−1, much than equivalent 30 kms−1.

LYRA - a solar UV radiometer using diamond detectors
LYRA, the Lyman-α radiometer, is a high–cadence (100 Hz) solar VUV radiometer which will measure disk–integrated irradiances in 4 wavelength channels. Special emphasis is given on novel detectors based on diamond which will be tested for the first time in space. Two kinds of detectors are employed: MSM– and PiN–type detectors. Their particular advantage compared to silicon detectors lies in the...

متن کاملA Solar Kite Mission to Study the Earth's Magneto-tail
Solar sails have been studied in the past as an alternative means of propulsion for spacecraft. Recent advances in solar sail technology and the miniaturisation of technology can drive these systems much smaller (< 5 kg mass, < 10 m sail diameter) than existing sails, while still having a high delta-V and acceleration capability. With these unique capabilities of miniature solar sails, called s...
