Production Performance, Defensive, Hygienic, Swarming, and Foraging Behavior of Apis mellifera scutellate bee race

چکیده
Honey bee colonies exhibit a wide range of behavioral variations depending on genetic origin and environmental factors. Therefore, the performance evaluation honey races is critical to laying foundation for future selection improvement in Ethiopia. Thirty Apis mellifera scutellata (A. m. scutellata) similar resources contained hive were kept improved box hives evaluated through various behaviors (i.e. Reproductive swarming tendency, foraging activity, defensive behavior, hygienic brood population, production, absconding behavior) during active season dearth season. In study area, A. race has higher tendency season, with up 3.42 queen caps per prepared year. Defensive behavior takes an average 25.41 seconds after disturbances follows 212.20-meter distance. But colony slightly took long time reach aggressiveness disturbance (31.28 seconds) followed observer short distance (45.58 meters). The closed production (149 units hive) nectar are reduced by 50% as compared yielding frame ranged from 1.3 kg 1.5 kg, 14 harvest. exhibited 34.5% if there was any disruption. showed good (>95%), but undesirable tendencies make it difficult manage bees. However, behaviors. Further, studies breeding could be conducted reduce improve performance.

Hygienic behavior of the honey bee (Apis mellifera) is independent of sucrose responsiveness and foraging ontogeny.
Hygienic behavior in honey bees is a behavioral mechanism of disease resistance. Bees bred for hygienic behavior exhibit an increased olfactory sensitivity to odors of diseased brood, which is most likely differentially enhanced in the hygienic line by the modulatory effects of octopamine (OA), a noradrenaline-like neuromodulator. Here, we addressed whether the hygienic behavioral state is link...
متن کاملHygienic behavior in the honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) and the modulatory role of octopamine.
Honey bees, Apis mellifera, which perform hygienic behavior, quickly detect, uncap and remove diseased brood from the nest. This behavior, performed by bees 15-20 days old and prior to foraging, is likely mediated by olfactory cues. Because the neuromodulator octopamine (OA) plays a pivotal role in olfactory-based behaviors of honey bees, we examined whether bees bred for hygienic and nonhygien...
متن کاملAssessing hygienic behavior of Apis mellifera unicolor (Hymenoptera: Apidae), the endemic honey bee from Madagascar.
Hygienic behavior (HB) is one of the natural mechanisms of honey bee for limiting the spread of brood diseases and Varroa destructor parasitic mite. Objective of our study was to measure HB of Apis mellifera unicolor colonies (N = 403) from three geographic regions (one infested and two free of V. destructor) in Madagascar. The pin-killing method was used for evaluation of the HB. Responses wer...

We examined the sequence, order or steps of hygienic behavior (HB) from pin-killed pupae until the removal of them by the bees. We conducted our study with four colonies of Apis mellifera carnica in Germany and made four repetitions. The pin-killing method was used for evaluation of the HB of bees. The data were collected every 2 h after perforation, totaling 13 observations. Additionally, for ...
متن کاملNo Genetic Tradeoffs between Hygienic Behaviour and Individual Innate Immunity in the Honey Bee, Apis mellifera
Many animals have individual and social mechanisms for combating pathogens. Animals may exhibit short-term physiological tradeoffs between social and individual immunity because the latter is often energetically costly. Genetic tradeoffs between these two traits can also occur if mutations that enhance social immunity diminish individual immunity, or vice versa. Physiological tradeoffs between ...
