Probing Photon Statistics in Adaptive Optics Images with SCExAO/MEC*

چکیده
We present an experimental study of photon statistics for high-contrast imaging with the Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detector (MKID) Exoplanet Camera (MEC) located behind Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics System (SCExAO) at Telescope. show that MEC measures expected distributions both on-axis companion intensity and off-axis which manifests as quasi-static speckles in image plane currently limits performance. These can be probed by any observation due to photon-counting capabilities MKID detectors. Photon arrival time also used directly distinguish companions from using a post-processing technique called Stochastic Speckle Discrimination (SSD). Here, we give overview SSD highlight first demonstration on extended source -- protoplanetary disk AB Aurigae. then simulations provide in-depth exploration current limitations extension Photon-Counting (PCSSD) path forward transitioning PCSSD on-sky results. end discussion how further improve efficacy such based techniques applicable MKIDs, well other high speed astronomical cameras.

The Strehl Ratio in Adaptive Optics Images: Statistics and Estimation
Statistical properties of the intensity in adaptive optics images are usually modeled with a Rician distribution. We study the central point of the image, where this model is inappropriate for high to very high correction levels. The central point is an important problem because it gives the Strehl ratio distribution. We show that the central point distribution can be modeled using a non-centra...
متن کاملAdaptive optics two-photon fluorescence microscopy
Non-linear imaging is widely used in biological imaging, primarily because of its ability to image through tissue to depth of a few hundred micrometers. Because two photons need to be absorbed to excite a fluorophore in this instrument, the probability of fluorescence emission of a detectable photon scales with the intensity squared of the beam. As a result, aberrations in the beam path that re...
متن کاملImages of photoreceptors in living primate eyes using adaptive optics two-photon ophthalmoscopy
In vivo two-photon imaging through the pupil of the primate eye has the potential to become a useful tool for functional imaging of the retina. Two-photon excited fluorescence images of the macaque cone mosaic were obtained using a fluorescence adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope, overcoming the challenges of a low numerical aperture, imperfect optics of the eye, high required light l...
متن کاملTemporal variability and statistics of the Strehl ratio in adaptive-optics images
We have investigated the temporal variability and statistics of the “instantaneous” Strehl ratio. The observations were carried out with the 3.63-m AEOS telescope equipped with a high-order adaptive optics system. In this paper Strehl ratio is defined as the peak intensity of a single short exposure. We have also studied the behaviour of the phase variance computed on the reconstructed wavefron...
متن کاملDeconvolution of adaptive optics retinal images.
We quantitatively demonstrate the improvement to adaptively corrected retinal images by using deconvolution to remove the residual wave-front aberrations. Qualitatively, deconvolution improves the contrast of the adaptive optics images. In this work we demonstrate that quantitative information is also increased by investigation of the improvement to cone classification due to the reduction in c...
