Prioritizing sites for terrestrial invasive alien plant management in urban ecosystems

چکیده

Rapid urbanization is placing increased pressure on natural, restored and designed ecosystems to provide services growing human populations. The establishment spread of invasive alien species within around urban areas threaten biodiversity ecosystem functioning, the they provide. Consequently, there a need protect manage where invasions will have greatest socio-ecological impact. Limited resources call for strategic prioritization these areas, yet are few widely adopted, standardized approaches prioritizing sites vulnerable in areas. We applied multi-criteria decision analyses geographic information system develop strategic, spatial approach identifying those most sensitive terrestrial plant invasions. To test this approach, we use Toronto region as case study, populous metropolitan area Canada one fastest centres North America. Through consultation with local conservation authorities, developed an objective, hierarchical set 19 criteria grouped into two categories: services. Spatial data layers were assigned each criterion used map important functioning providing overlayed priority distribution Vincetoxicum rossicum, region's widespread damaging (IAPs) determine potential threat species’ pose High-priority identified by our model include significant value such intact forests, meadows wetlands which crucial regulating supporting Our IAPs showed that high-priority heavily invaded (92.9% occupied V. rossicum comprises medium-high-priority sites) should be prioritized management ensure provision maximized. study can useful practitioners guiding selection high-priority, socio-ecologically action landscapes across different regions scales.

Integrated control of invasive alien plants in terrestrial ecosystems

Effective management of invading alien plants in natural and semi-natural systems is imperative if we are to prevent enormous impacts. An integrated approach involving the combined use of a range of methods is usually necessary to control invasive alien plants effectively. The various methods that are available are usually classified as: mechanical methods (felling, removing of invading alien p...

Flowering phenology of invasive alien plant species compared with native species in three Mediterranean-type ecosystems.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Flowering phenology is a potentially important component of success of alien species, since elevated fecundity may enhance invasiveness. The flowering patterns of invasive alien plant species and related natives were studied in three regions with Mediterranean-type climate: California, Spain and South Africa's Cape region. METHODS A total of 227 invasive-native pairs were ...

Ecological niche modeling of invasive alien plant species in a protected landscape

Non-native plants that can cause adverse effects are otherwise known as invasive alien plant species which pose a major threat to plant biodiversity conservation and sustainability. This study is dedicated to determine the plant diversity and to assess the vulnerability of Quezon Protected Landscape, Southern Luzon, the Philippines to invasive alien plant species. Data from 90 10x10 m randomly ...

Plant-microbe-herbivore interactions in invasive and non-invasive alien plant species

1. Plants interact with many organisms, such as microbes and herbivores, and these interactions are likely to affect the establishment and spread of plants. In the context of plant invasions, mycorrhizal fungi and constitutive and induced resistance of plants against herbivores have received attention independently of each other. However, plants are frequently involved in complex multi-trophic ...
