The microscopical pathology of primary parathyroid hyperplasia.
The microscopical pathology of the two types of primary parathyroid hyperplasia is reviewed. The importance of the differential diagnosis between chief cell hyperplasia and adenoma is stressed. The problems of the surgical pathologist in masking this differential diagnosis of a biopsy, especially on a frozen section sample, are discussed.
متن کاملThe experience of parathyroidectomy when treating primary parathyroid hyperplasia.
BACKGROUND Total parathyroidectomy with forearm autograft (TP) and subtotal parathyroidectomy (SP) are the two widely-accepted surgical procedures for treating primary parathyroid hyperplasia. Although TP carries an increased risk of permanent hypoparathyroidism and implantation site recurrence, it is still the preferred option of some surgeons. This retrospective study's aim is to confirm the ...
متن کاملMonoclonality of parathyroid tumors in chronic renal failure and in primary parathyroid hyperplasia.
The pathogeneses of parathyroid disease in patients with uremia and nonfamilial primary parathyroid hyperplasia are poorly understood. Because of multigland involvement, it has been assumed that these common diseases predominantly involve polyclonal (non-neoplastic) cellular proliferations, but an overall assessment of their clonality has not been done. We examined the clonality of these hyperp...
متن کاملParathyroid hyperplasia associated with thymoma.
The case of a 65 year old female with myasthenia gravis and hypercalcaemia is presented. Failure of medical control of the myasthenia necessitated thymectomy at which time parathyroid exploration was also carried out. This revealed parathyroid hyperplasia and a thymoma. This association has not been previously documented in the literature.
متن کاملConcurrent Parathyroid Carcinoma and Hyperplasia in Hyperparathyroidism
To the Editor, Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare disease that accounts for less than 1% of all hyperparathyroidism [1]. The incidence of parathyroid carcinoma is extremely low, although the apparent incidence of hyperparathyroidism increased after the introduction of multi-channel autoanalyzers. If increased serum calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels are sustained postoperatively, metasta...
