Prevention of edge fracture using a nontoxic liquid metal sealant

Edge fracture, the sudden indentation of a viscoelastic fluid's free surface, often occurs when sufficiently strong shear is applied to fluid, rendering rheological measurements at high rates difficult. We show that sealing fluid sample's surface with nontoxic liquid metal Galinstan can delay fracture occurrence, extending measurable rate range cone-and-plate fixture by decade. The method's effectiveness compared cone-partitioned plate fixture, an existing tool for mitigating adverse effects sample fracture. Our cheap yet effective way prevent edge will benefit general study complex fluids.
