Present tense in relative clauses as evidence for sequence of tense in French

چکیده
The paper accounts for an unexpected embedded present tense, which denotes a future time in French relative clauses. matrix displays either the periphrastic or simple future. In both cases, one can arguably decompose into tense feature and forward shifter. This move leads to analysis of morphology encountered clause as instance Sequence tense.

Tense in Adjuncts Part 2: Temporal Adverbial Clauses
1. RECAPITULATION Part I of this article treats tense in relative clauses (RCs) in English, Russian and Japanese. The temporal centre in RCs can always be Tproi, and sometimes it has to be Tproi. 1. In SOT languages such as English, the Tense in the RC is bound in RC\wollconfigurations, i.e., we find a Tproi bound by woll. The licensing of the morphological tense in the RC is non-local in these...
متن کاملAnnotating "tense" in a Tense-less Language
In the context of Natural Language Processing, annotation is about recovering implicit information that is useful for natural language applications. In this paper we describe a “tense” annotation task for Chinese, a language that does not have grammatical tense, that is designed to infer the temporal location of a situation in relation to the temporal deixis, the moment of speech. If successful...
متن کاملEvidence for syntactic competition in the acquisition of tense and agreement in child French
1 The proposal In many languages, children around the age of 2 make certain systematic errors in their verbal forms. They produce both non-finite root forms (NRFs) and finite forms in contexts where finite forms are required in the adult language. This is often referred to as the “optional infinitive (OI) stage” (Wexler 1994, 1998). For example, young children acquiring French as their native l...
متن کاملA syntax-semantics interface for tense and aspect in French∗
Contemporary studies of the semantics of tense and aspect tend to rely on syntactic hypotheses that are at odds with those of a phrase-structure based and lexicalist approach to syntax, such as that embodied in HPSG. For instance, de Swart (1998) explicitly assumes that tense relations originate in a syntactic position distinct from that of the head verb of the clause; and the approach to aspec...
متن کاملPast tense in the brain's time: Neurophysiological evidence for dual-route processing of past-tense verbs
A controversial issue in neuro- and psycholinguistics is whether regular past-tense forms of verbs are stored lexically or generated productively by the application of abstract combinatorial schemas, for example affixation rules. The success or failure of models in accounting for this particular issue can be used to draw more general conclusions about cognition and the degree to which abstract,...
