Preliminary sub-acute toxicological assessment of methanol leaves extract of Culcasia angolensis (Araceae) in Wistar rats

Abstract Background The plant Culcasia angolensis (Araceae) has diverse ethnomedicinal uses, including the management of rheumatic pain, healing cuts, dislocations, and bruises. Despite its potential therapeutic toxicity profile not been evaluated. This study assessed sub-acute effects leaves extract (CAE). phytochemical determination CAE was conducted as per standard protocols. median lethal dose (LD 50 ) determined using Organization for Economic Cooperation Development (OECD) 423 guideline. Besides, toxic (125, 250, 500 mg/kg) were investigated following administration daily 28 consecutive days OECD 407 weekly body weights recorded. animals euthanized on 29th day, blood samples obtained haematological biochemical investigations. heart, kidney, liver, lungs collected histological examinations. relative organ (ROW) determined. Results contains cardiac glycosides, alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, steroids, saponins, terpenoids. oral LD above 5 g/kg. There a remarkable decline in weight at all doses. increased lymphocytes, aspartate transaminase, urea. However, levels alanine transaminase alkaline phosphatase elevated remarkably. studies did reveal any serious organs abnormalities. Conclusion is relatively safe acute administration. it may be slightly administration, especially to liver kidney.
