Predictive value of functional MRI and EEG in epilepsy diagnosis after a first seizure

چکیده

It is often difficult to predict seizure recurrence in subjects who have suffered a first-ever epileptic seizure. In this study, the predictive value of physiological signals measured using Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional MRI (fMRI) assessed. particular those patients developing epilepsy (i.e. second unprovoked seizure) that were initially evaluated as having low risk are interest. In total, 26 patients, which 8 converters), 17 with only single included. All underwent routine EEG well fMRI measurements. For diagnostic classification, features related temporal dynamics determined for both processed data. Subsequently, logistic regression classifier was trained on first-seizure subjects. The model tested clinically relevant converters group. The sensitivity, specificity, AUC (mean ± SD) including metrics from modalities 74 19%, 82 18%, 0.75 0.12, respectively. Positive negative values 84 14% 78 12%. Moreover, EEG/fMRI showed significant improvements compared clinical diagnosis, whereas models either or do not reach significance (p > 0.05).Temporal computationally derived time may aid synergistically improve sample.

‘Functional Connectivity’ Is a Sensitive Predictor of Epilepsy Diagnosis after the First Seizure

BACKGROUND Although epilepsy affects almost 1% of the world population, diagnosis of this debilitating disease is still difficult. The EEG is an important tool for epilepsy diagnosis and classification, but the sensitivity of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) on the first EEG is only 30-50%. Here we investigate whether using 'functional connectivity' can improve the diagnostic sensitivi...

VALUE OF INT ER-ICTAL SURFACE EEG IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF SEIZURE DISORDERS IN CHILDREN: A LOCAL ST UDY

We wished to assess the frequency of EEG positivity with our available EEG technology to compare with those elsewhere. Between April 1996 to February 1997, of patients referred to the Pediatric Neurology Out-patient Clinic for assessment of seizure disorders, 202 randomly selected patients aged 16 months to 17 years (mean 8.96 years) underwent a 10-minute inter-ictal EEG recording using a ...

evaluation of partial epilepsy in iran: role of video-eeg, eeg, and mri with epilepsy protocol.

background: we evaluated the diagnostic value of electroencephalography (eeg), video-eeg monitoring (vem) and magnetic resonance imaging (mri) of the brain with epilepsy protocol in patients with complex partial epilepsy. methods: forty-two consecutive patients underwent complete neurological examination, eeg, and mri with a modified epilepsy protocol. a subset of these patients (n = 29) also u...

Yield of EEG After a First Unprovoked Seizure

New diagnostic criteria define epilepsy as a disorder of the brain characterized by an enduring predisposition to generate epileptic seizures. Two factors are associated with an increased risk of relapse: the presence of a cerebral lesion and epileptiform abnormalities (EA) in the electroencephalogram (EEG). In this paper we focus on the risk of relapse after a first unprovoked seizure; we revi...

EEG-triggered functional MRI in patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) triggered by scalp electroencephalography (EEG) recordings has become a promising new tool for noninvasive epileptic focus localization. Studies to date have shown that it can be used safely and that highly localized information can be obtained. So far, no reports using comprehensive clinical information and/or long-term follow-up after epilepsy surg...
