PREDICTIONS WITHOUT FUTURES*

چکیده

Modernity held sacred the aspirational formula of open future: a promise human determination that doubles as an injunction to control. Today, banner this plannable future is borne by technology. Allegedly impersonal, neutral, and exempt from disillusionment with ideology, belief in technological change saturates present horizon historical futures. Yet I argue exactly how today's technofutures enact hegemony closure sameness. In particular, growing emphasis on prediction AI's skeleton key all social problems constitutes what religious studies calls cosmograms: universalizing models govern facts values relate each other, providing common normative point reference. predictive paradigm, are made conceivable only objects calculative control—control can never be fulfilled but persists eternally deferred recycled horizon. show technofuture maintained not so much producing literally accurate predictions events through ritualized demonstrations time.

Prospective uncertainty: The range of possible futures in physical predictions

Recent research has suggested that people make physical predictions based on extrapolation from a noisy representation of the world, which gives rise to a probabilistic distribution over possible future worlds. But can people use the uncertainty of their predictions to inform their decisions, or can people access only a single possible future? Here we demonstrate that confidence-sensitive decis...

Haploinsufficiency predictions without study bias

Any given human individual carries multiple genetic variants that disrupt protein-coding genes, through structural variation, as well as nucleotide variants and indels. Predicting the phenotypic consequences of a gene disruption remains a significant challenge. Current approaches employ information from a range of biological networks to predict which human genes are haploinsufficient (meaning t...

Maintaining Predictions over Time without a Model

A common approach to the control problem in partially observable environments is to perform a direct search in policy space, as defined over some set of features of history. In this paper we consider predictive features, whose values are conditional probabilities of future events, given history. Since predictive features provide direct information about the agent’s future, they have a number of...

Physics without Laws - Making exact Predictions with data based Methods

The mathematical method of fractional or continuous iteration can be used to model a dynamical system exactly from limited experimental data. However, mathematics is complicated and exact solutions even if proven to exist can rarely be found analytically. We have shown previously that neural networks can be utilized to numerically compute fractional iterates of mathematical functions. In this p...

The desirability bias in predictions: Going optimistic without leaving realism

Does desire for an outcome inflate optimism? Previous experiments have produced mixed results regarding the desirability bias, with the bulk of supportive findings coming from one paradigm— the classic marked-card paradigm in which people make discrete predictions about desirable or undesirable cards being drawn from decks. We introduce a biased-guessing account for the effects from this paradi...
