Prediction Model for Breeding Hardy Geraniums

Key message. The success of interspecific hybridization in hardy geranium (Geranium sp.) can be predicted by considering the genetic distance between parental genotypes and using logistic regression model developed this study. Hardy is a popular ornamental plant known for its architecture, hardiness, prolonged flowering, diverse colors leaves flowers. In breeding, pursuit novel trait combinations never-ending. Even Geranium, certain valuable traits have not yet been achieved. Interspecific increase diversity; however, remains low due to pre- postzygotic barriers. Crossing response criteria such as pollen tube growth (tube_length), seed development (seed_dev), setting (seed_set). Within collection 42 Geranium during two consecutive breeding seasons (years), we evaluated tube_length, seed_dev, seed_set 150, 1155, 349 crosses, respectively. These crosses varied four differences (variables): chromosome number (Chrom), DNA/chromosome (DNA), style length (Style), expressed Jaccard (cJaccard = 1 − Jaccard). Using models has confirmed that most often, rate decreased with increasing distance. consistent association was seen seed_dev combination cJaccard. used predict necessary 10 successful crossing products taking into account uncertainty model. findings provide guidance future planning experiments Geranium. By incorporating genotypes, breeders enhance efficiency efforts.
