Predicting Fine Root Decomposition from Functional Traits in 10 Temperate Tree Species

چکیده

Decomposition of plant roots and their related fungal mutualists is a fundamental process ecosystem material cycles. Despite the fact that fine are dominant source soil organic carbon (SOC) storage, our understanding functional traits controlling root decomposition still far from clear. In present study, among four arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) six ectomycorrhizal (EM) species was studied in temperate forest after 570 days exposure. Our results showed AM decomposed faster than EM species. findings further suggested initial aluminum (Al) manganese (Mn) concentrations were best predictors for we measured. Initial cellulose concentration, carbon:nitrogen ratio (C:N), lignin:N closely to contrast, species, phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), non–structural carbohydrate (NSC) decomposition. The Na, Fe, NSC, cellulose, hemicellulose useful across 10 tree

Predicting fine root lifespan from plant functional traits in temperate trees.

Although linkages of leaf and whole-plant traits to leaf lifespan have been rigorously investigated, there is a limited understanding of similar linkages of whole-plant and fine root traits to root lifespan. In comparisons across species, do suites of traits found in leaves also exist for roots, and can these traits be used to predict root lifespan? We observed the fine root lifespan of 12 temp...

Interspecific coordination and intraspecific plasticity of fine root traits in North American temperate tree species

Fine roots play an important role in nutrient and water absorption and hence overall tree performance. However, current understanding of the ecological role of belowground traits lags considerably behind those of aboveground traits. In this study, we used data on specific root length (SRL), fine root diameter (D) and branching intensity (BI) of two datasets to examine interspecific trait coordi...

Linking fine root traits to maximum potential growth rate among 11 mature temperate tree species

1. There is limited understanding of patterns of variation that exist among root traits of different species, especially under field conditions. We contrasted 11 fastand slow-growing species paired within five evolutionary lineages to investigate whether root traits associated with soil resource acquisition were related to species’ potential growth rate. 2. Measurements of root morphology, arch...

Do ectomycorrhizal and arbuscular mycorrhizal temperate tree species systematically differ in root order-related fine root morphology and biomass?

While most temperate broad-leaved tree species form ectomycorrhizal (EM) symbioses, a few species have arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM). It is not known whether EM and AM tree species differ systematically with respect to fine root morphology, fine root system size and root functioning. In a species-rich temperate mixed forest, we studied the fine root morphology and biomass of three EM and three AM...

Predicting species' range limits from functional traits for the tree flora of North America.

Using functional traits to explain species' range limits is a promising approach in functional biogeography. It replaces the idiosyncrasy of species-specific climate ranges with a generic trait-based predictive framework. In addition, it has the potential to shed light on specific filter mechanisms creating large-scale vegetation patterns. However, its application to a continental flora, spanni...
