Precolonial African Historiography as a multidisciplinary project

In this historiographical article we analyse the three sources from which historians obtain their material for research of Bahurutshe (a subgroup Sotho-Tswana South Africa) in precolonial era: oral tradition, archaeological studies Iron Age sites, and oldest written accounts by European visitors to Marico. We show that because Batswana were non-literate societies before nineteenth century, study early history is a multidisciplinary project requiring inputs anthropologists, archaeologists linguists. To produce cohesive narrative African an arduous task, but has major significance bigger picture (South) past informs ongoing discourses about region. argue Hurutshe fits into broader pattern relevance understanding current debates around controversial issues such as ethnicity land claims.
