Pragmatic reframing from distress to playfulness: !Xun caregiver responses to infant crying

Using the method and theoretical perspective of language socialization, this paper examines pragmatic reframing infant behavior from distress to playfulness among !Xun San north–central Namibia. Reframing mobilizes a constellation multiple semiotic resources. For !Xun, central these resources is “gymnastic behavior,” namely, holding infants upright or moving them up down (bouncing). The analysis shows that caregivers frequently engage in gymnastic response crying other displays distress. They thereby collaboratively create rhythms with encourage display joyful reactions. Consequently, grow accustomed rekeying long before they can do so using language. Along that, often involve people changing participation framework family interactions. These findings suggest assist establishing an intimate intercorporeality. Moreover, by particular manner, their alignment knowledge value system. Involvement around caregiving also enhances (re)socialization each interactant into social identities. It argued features forge development distinct intersubjectivity.
