Practical Aspects of Cylinder Deactivation and Reactivation

Cylinder deactivation is an effective measure to reduce the fuel consumption of internal combustion engines. This paper deals with several practical aspects switching from conventional operation deactivated cylinders, i.e., gas spring closed intake and exhaust valves. The focus this lies on one particular quantity-controlled stoichiometrically-operated engine where load controlled using valve timing. Nevertheless, main results are transferable other engines types, including quality-controlled first aspect analysis transition fired operation, vice versa, as well itself. essential for mode changes, such cylinder or skip-firing operation. Simulation show that optimizing timing in last cycle before deactivating/first after reactivating a cylinder, respectively, advantageous. We further steady-state reached approximately 6 s regardless initial conditions speed. second experimentally verifies advantage optimized timings. Furthermore, we measurements demonstrate occurrence unavoidable torque ripple, especially when performed too quickly. also confirm our experiments more gradual reduces drop.
