Potential Source Areas for Atmospheric Lead Reaching Ny-Ålesund from 2010 to 2018

Lead content, enrichment factors, and isotopic composition (208Pb/206Pb 207Pb/206Pb) measured in atmospheric particulate matter (PM10) samples collected for nine years at Ny-Ålesund (Svalbard islands, Norwegian Arctic) during spring summer are presented discussed. The possible source areas (PSA) inferred from Pb isotope ratio values were compared to cluster analysis of back-trajectories. Results show that anthropogenic dominates over natural crustal Pb, with a recurring higher influence spring, summer. Crustal accounted 5–16% the concentration. Anthropogenic was affected by (i) Central Asian PSA signature compatible ores smelted Rudny Altai region, Russian Kazakhstan border, which 85% concentration, (ii) weaker North American PSA, contributing remaining 15%. exerted an on 71–86% samples, without any significant interannual variation. On contrary, 59–87% influenced contributions 2015 2018. Back-trajectory agreed seasonal difference highlighted increased air masses 2010 2018, but not 2015.
