Potential importance of urban areas for water voles: Arvicola amphibius

نویسندگان

چکیده

Cities are not often considered priority areas for threatened mammals; however, recent research suggests that urban may be important water vole (Arvicola amphibius) conservation. To establish the potential importance of cities in supporting populations, we used National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Atlas data to examine occurrence voles within United Kingdom (UK). Water were recorded 28 out 64 official UK last decade (2010–2018), and rivers streams parks, sports grounds, reserves most habitat types. In total, found 497 records sightings cities, representing 5.0% all this species NBN Atlas. Our results show indeed many suggesting populations more common than previously recognised. We therefore recommend these conservation should further established.

Measuring Animal Welfare within a Reintroduction: An Assessment of Different Indices of Stress in Water Voles Arvicola amphibius

Reintroductions are an increasingly common conservation restoration tool; however, little attention has hitherto been given to different methods for monitoring the stress encountered by reintroduced individuals. We compared ten potential measures of stress within four different categories (neuroendocrine, cell function, body condition and immune system function) as proxies for animal welfare in...

Genetic variability and structure of the water vole Arvicola amphibius across four metapopulations in northern Norway

Water vole Arvicola amphibius populations have recently experienced severe decline in several European countries as a consequence of both reduction in suitable habitat and the establishment of the alien predator American mink Neovison vison. We used DNA microsatellite markers to describe the genetic structure of 14 island populations of water vole off the coast of northern Norway. We looked at ...

The colonization history of British water vole (Arvicola amphibius (Linnaeus, 1758)): origins and development of the Celtic fringe.

The terminal Pleistocene and Early Holocene, a period from 15 000 to 18 000 Before Present (BP), was critical in establishing the current Holarctic fauna, with temperate-climate species largely replacing cold-adapted ones at mid-latitudes. However, the timing and nature of this process remain unclear for many taxa, a point that impacts on current and future management strategies. Here, we use a...

Widespread gene flow and high genetic variability in populations of water voles Arvicola terrestris in patchy habitats.

Theory predicts that the impact of gene flow on the genetic structure of populations in patchy habitats depends on its scale and the demographic attributes of demes (e.g. local colony sizes and timing of reproduction), but empirical evidence is scarce. We inferred the impact of gene flow on genetic structure among populations of water voles Arvicola terrestris that differed in average colony si...

Surface Water Flow of Urban Areas and Sustainable Urban Planning

Urban planning is associated with land transformation from natural areas to modified and developed ones which leads to modification of natural environment. The basic knowledge of relationship between both should be ascertained before proceeding for the development of natural areas. Changes on land surface due to build up pavements, roads and similar land cover, affect surface water flow. There ...
